Faulkner re-write

It was late, about 2:00 in the mourning and pitch black outside. There was no one left in the café, it was basically empty except for the exception of the old man who enjoyed the night because he was deaf and felt the elegance of the night. He liked to be alone and drink while sitting in the dark corner of the café looking in the distance. The two waiters watching him angry as it were getting late and the café was a mess and still was to be cleaned. The old man however didn’t want to leave he seemed happy and comfortable to be alone in the midst of the dark corner wondering. The man was of 80 years old wrinkled and all, cold, pale and not seeking attention. The two waiters had to ask themselves, who was in charge of this man? Is he alone? Does he have any family?

The old man sat outside in the dark and gloomy night while the two waiters watched him steadily. A young soldier from the military walks by the old man with his wife in the dark shadows and his medal shines and glistens from the light of the moon. The old man then sat looking through the glass of the café and tapping on his glass as a signal for the waiter to come give him a refill on his brandy. By this time the young waiter is very angry and furious at the old man because all he wants to do is go home.

Once the old man tried to hang himself and was cut down by his niece. The young waiter wanted him dead because he was tired of serving the old man. “You should have killed yourself last week,” he said to the deaf man.” The young waiter poured the old man his glass of brandy and the old man looks at him with a steady silent face and says to the waiter, “A little more”. The waiter who is now very frustrated goes back inside the café and sits with the other waiter while they look into the night and wonder when this old man will finally get too tired and drunk and get home.

It is now getting very late and the young waiter is getting patient. He and his colleague are sitting around the café thinking and talking. The young waiter lets the old waiter know that he never sleeps before 3:00 in the mourning because he is always tending the café late at night. He tells the older waiter, “What kind of hour is that to go to bed?” Now he old man is signaling to the young waiter that he wants more brandy. “Another brandy,” he said, pointing to his glass.” The young waiter who is now completely frustrated tells the old man he has had enough to drink for the night. “Finished” “Another, said the old man.” “No. finished.” The old man finally gets up and pays the young waiter. They can finally go as the old man gets up slowly and walks out drunk and curious of what will happen next.

The young waiter gets ready to leave and the old waiter stays as he sits in the café, for he is the same as the old man. He appreciates the gloomy and cold nights and enjoys drinking alone in the quiet. The younger waiter says to his colleague, “Come on. Stop talking nonsense and lock up.” The old waiter doesn’t listen and lets the young waiter know that he is one who doesn’t want to sleep and wants to be alone in the dark to drink. The waiter leaves and the old waiter is sat comfortably at the bar talking to himself. He now lies in his cozy, warm bed as it is now light out and the dark has passed. He lets himself know that his times of being up late are probably due to insomnia. “After all, he said to himself, it is probably only insomnia. Many must have it.”

Faulkner re-write with comments

It was late, about two o’clock in the morning and pitch black outside. There was no one left in the café, it was basically empty except for the exception of the old man who enjoyed the night because he was deaf and felt the elegance of the night. He liked to be alone and drink while sitting in the dark corner of the café looking in the distance.[MPS1] The two waiters watching him angry as it were getting late and the café was a mess and still was to be cleaned. The young waiter poured the old man his glass of brandy and the old man looks at him with a steady silent face and says to the waiter, “A little more”. [MPS4] The waiter who is now very frustrated goes back inside the café and sits with the other waiter while they look into the night and wonder when this old man will finally get too tired and drunk and get home.

It is now getting very late and the young waiter is getting impatient. He and his colleague are sitting around the café thinking and talking. He tells the older waiter, “What kind of hour is that to go to bed?” Now he old man is signaling to the young waiter that he wants more brandy. “Another brandy,” he said, pointing to his glass.[MPS5] The young waiter who is now completely frustrated tells the old man he has had enough to drink for the night. “Finished” “Another”, said the old man. “No. finished.” The old man finally gets up and pays the young waiter.[MPS6] They can finally go as the old man gets up slowly and walks out drunk and curious of what will happen next.

[MPS1]Here I am describing the setting with detail as Faulkner would do. Gives the reader more to focus on and lets them know the hour of night and what the café looks like so late at night.

[MPS2]Here I am describing the old man with great detail early in the story. It brings less questions to the reader about him and it is something Faulkner would definitely do in his writings.

[MPS3]I used much detail in describing this scene because Faulkner uses a lot of detail when describing things.

[MPS4]In this section, I used dialogue, because Faulkner is known for using a lot of dialogue as compared to Hemingway who uses barely any.

[MPS5]Here I describe a time, because it lets the reader know more about the young waiter and his character. I also describe more about the old man as Faulkner would do in detail.

[MPS6]I use dialogue again to describe the scene of how the young waiter is mad at the old man for staying so late. Faulkner uses dialogue many times in his writings.

[MPS7]I use some characterization here in this section, because Faulkner uses some characterization for the reader to get a good hint of the characters and feel they know them.

[MPS8]Here I use more dialogue followed by some characterization. Faulkner uses both many times in his writings. Also, Faulkner uses details to describe his characters as I did here.

[MPS9]Dialogue is used here as well, because Faulkner uses it much to give the reader a better understanding of what’s going on and how the characters act.

Chasing Ghosts

Novels and plays, and even memoirs often depict characters caught between colliding nations. In the memoir Chasing Ghosts by Paul Rieckhoff, the author Paul Rieckhoff experiences a collision between nations while fighting for The United States of America in a war taking place in Iraq. Paul Rieckhoff responds to this cultural collision in his memoir and even criticizes our government and speaks his mind about many tragedies and disappointments along the way.

Paul Rieckhoff is a soldier who disagrees with the war and explains his responses of the war through his memoir. By the end of the memoir, Paul is criticizing George Bush and his exaggeration towards some events in Iraq. (Pg. 306) “America was not safer. And it was his fault. And despite all this, he was going to win the presidential election in November. I was sure of it.” George Bush in Paul’s point of view is wrong in sending the troops into Iraq and knowing that things are going wrong over there, but then admitting that everything is fine. Paul Rieckhoff doesn’t agree with this, because Bush is the president and to Paul that is something he doesn’t look up to in Bush, especially since he has the feeling he will be reelected as president. (Pg. 306) “So my new band of brothers and I focused our eyes on the ball. We would fix what the most powerful people in the world had broken.” Bush was reelected president, and Paul believes that our country is still in jeopardy and the only way it can be fixed is to end the battle in Iraq, which Paul plans on doing and he is looking up to him and his brothers fixing the problems in this country. This part of the memoir is relevant to the memoir as a whole, because it shows a lot about Paul Rieckhoff. He is a soldier who wants to fight for his country, but at the same time he disagrees with the war and how it was planned. Paul is a man who doesn’t mind expressing his true feelings, in which he does a countless number of times in this memoir. He even criticizes Bush and his acts towards the war, and shows no fear while doing so, which shows how strong of a man he is.

The memoir starts off with Paul on his way toward Iraq and seems anxious as well as pissed off. As we know, Paul is not the biggest fan of George Bush and even though he disagrees with the man in charge of the war, he still has the strength to fight for his country. (Pg. 1) “George Bush had better be fucking right.” Those are the words of Paul Rieckhoff and are also the first line he uses to start off his memoir. Paul is basically stating that Bush was wrong in sending troops into Iraq and that there was probably a better way to handle it. In Paul’s mind, he feels that Bush will be brought down if the war is a mistake and a lot of men are injured or killed, which reflects back to Paul stating that Bush better be right. (Pg. 309) “George Bush wasn’t fucking right. But now we have the means to fix what he broke.” Again, Paul expresses his feelings towards Bush and the way he runs the country. After Paul had fought in Iraq, he realizes that Bush wasn’t right and that more troops would be sent into Iraq to fill in and keep the battle going. The only way Paul can see our country being fixed, is for the people of the country to step up and take action. Beginning and Ending the memoir with these words, are very significant to the memoir as a whole, because at first, it gives the reader the acknowledgement that Paul doesn’t agree with Bush, and then by restating it at the end of the memoir keeps the reader informed that Bush was wrong and that Paul isn’t a big fan of Bush, but still had the guts to fight in the war, not for Bush, but for his country and freedom. This quote also gives the reader the idea that Paul is going to bring out his emotions and some events that he probably had rough times with in this memoir, and also gives the reader that Paul isn’t afraid to speak his mind, which keeps the reader reading, which is very important to the text.

When Paul returns home, he has some words for Bush about policies that had affected him and his men during the war. (Pg. 271) “So I called the Bush campaign headquarters. I told the kid who answered the phone that I had just returned from Iraq.” I also left messages with the Veterans for Bush campaign. No one called me back. Big surprise.” Paul is again bringing up Bush, because he called for him and wanted to talk to him about the war and some issues that should be addressed. This shows how Paul isn’t afraid of Bush and doesn’t care about speaking his mind. When Paul gets no call back, he doesn’t really get affected by it, because he figured it would happen. This shows how Paul has no trust in Bush and his character, and also proves that maybe Bush knows he was wrong and that some of his actions were not well planned. This all relates to the text, because again it shows Paul’s character, and gives the reader an idea that Bush doesn’t really think on his acts towards something as serious as war.

In conclusion, Chasing Ghosts is a memoir which depicts the national collision America has with Iraq. It is also a memoir in which a character struggles during the collision of nations and then explains his feelings and responds to the country in some crazy ways. The story starts out with Paul sort of criticizing Bush and explains the reason for the war. Paul is shown as a character that doesn’t really care about expressing his feelings towards war and saying what he wants to say. This all comes down toward the theme of the memoir, in which war is a horrible thing and should be taken seriously. In Paul’s eyes, Bush wasn’t following that meaning and this memoir came out of those issues. Paul believes that the only way in which this country can be fixed, is if we do it ourselves and if Bush isn’t reelected.

Self-Assessent

The first quarter for me was great. I did better than I expected. I got an 82 which for me is very good. The vocabulary quizzes were pretty easy for me the first time through in which I got an 80 on both of them. If I were to stay after school and make them up until I got 100’s, I probably would have ended up in the high 80’s low 90’s. Another he mistake I made, was being extremely lazy over the summer. If I was to do the summer reading which was only five percent of my grade, and received a 100 then my grade most definitely have been in the mid 90’s along with redoing the vocabulary until perfect.

Once I realized I had gotten a 15 on my summer reading assignments, I never thought it would even be possible for me to reach the 80’s point. I figured I end up with a mid 70’s grade, but since I worked extra hard to my standards, I ended up in the low 80’s which for me is awesome. On my major assignments, I did very well and finished all of them on time which gave me the opportunity to make them up whenever I wanted. I decided not too however because my grades to my standards were already good enough to be marked down. However, on the in class essay for A Doll’s House, I should have put an extra period of time into studying to try and reach in the 80’s instead of the 70’s.

All together I feel excellent about my grade and how I did this quarter. Hopefully this quarter however I will end up with a higher grade, because I won’t have to worry about summer reading, and if I don’t end up with 100’s on my vocabulary I will make sure to redo them until perfection to show that I am committed to get the highest grade possible this quarter. I will also be trying to participate more in class this time around because that is also a good chunk out of the quarter grades. First time around I received an 8 out of 10 which for me is good but I should try an go that distance for the 10 anything lower isn’t necessary.

All Souls Filler Page

It has been about a month since Frankie has been shot in the back with the shotgun from trying to pull off a stupid attempt of robbery. He is going through therapy now and the Doctors are saying he should be in good conditions very soon. Mom is shattered from what happened and at the same time very pissed off from the fact that Frankie has been doing Coke again months before the accident has happened. Frankie says it made him feel more invulnerable. The news of the robbery has spread all over Boston and everyone wants Frankie back into the ring to try and win that Heavy Weight championship belt. Mom and I want nothing better than to get out of this place for a better environment for the kids to grow up in. Kevin was suppose to go in for the robbery but has changed and didn’t want to do it. Frankie took his place, and I’m asking myself why? He is about to be a champ in one of the toughest sports in the world, what would he do such a stupid thing for? Grandpa is also wandering the same thing and always tells mom that it is a shame for a great kid like Frankie to do something so stupid. In about a month or so, Frankie should be completely healed and will be able to compete in the ring once again. The Irish in this city have got to be proud now Frankie is basically a role model to everyone in this place. Mom can’t wait for Frankie to get back out there for another opportunity to become champion and get enough money for us to move out of here.

Frankie is finally standing in the ring once again to show off his impressive skills and amazing powerful blows. At first he won a number of competitive fights becoming more popular around the East Coast. After winning a huge fight against the undefeated Joe Budden 52-0, who got knocked out in the 3rd round, Frankie was now known as the best of the best. He was bringing in the cash and moved out family out of Boston into Colorado where mom has always wanted to live. Frankie is now 60-0 with 55 Knock outs. His Heavy Weight match against the champ for the belt is scheduled in two weeks. Frankie’s opponent is the dangerous Pauley Smith from New York City and the fight will take place at Madison Square Garden.

The fight has begun, Frankie is hitting Pauley with powerful body shots, the way he would fake fight with me. He always taught me that body shots were always important especially if the enemy is a lot more powerful than you are. I don’t understand how anyone could be stronger than Frankie, but I guess anything is possible. Unbelievable, the fight is now in the 12th and final round. Frankie is brutalizing the ever so dangerous Pauley Smith. He hits him with a left and then a right, followed by and upper cut that sent Pauley to the floor. Frankie has won knocked out the best fighter in the world, what a happy moment for mom and the kids. I can’t believe my brother Francis Xavier MacDonald is now Champion of the World. He is a great inspiration to all back in Southie.

A New Birth

On August 27th 2004, I woke up in the early morning to hear my mother and father “yelling” at each other, because my mother was going into labor. I got nervous, but realized that I was a grown teenager and I should toughen up and help with anything my parents needed. I helped my mom get into the car and off we went towards Salem hospital in Salem Massachusetts.

I was thirteen and kind of anxious on how my mother was feeling and if my sister would be healthy. I sat in the waiting room pacing back and forth waiting for my beautiful baby sister to enter this beautiful world. My younger brother sat on a couch sleeping, while my older sister was filled with excitement and wanted nothing more but to see the beauty happen right in front of her eyes.

I was nervous on the way there, but also amazingly anxious to finally see my baby sister in all her glory. My mother was screaming in the background holding her stomach and all trying to relieve some of the pain she was experiencing. I tried to tune her out with a picture of the beauty that was going to happen, but my mother was as just too loud. I was thirteen and I figured all this screaming couldn’t b a good sign. No one was letting me know it was okay and that my mother was screaming because of pain. I then realized that birth is a very painful process and that every woman screams during birth. I began to cool down and not worry so much, but my sister was annoying me as she was so excited in the background, because she has already witnessed me being born years before. My mother became my hero that day, because she was dealing with it and not getting too crazy, she must have been used to it, because she had already went though this process three times before having my brother, sister, and me to show for it.

Finally, it was over and I saw my sister, Aaliyah Dineen Ortiz. She was beautiful and healthy. I loved her from first sight, and from that moment on it inspired me to be more of a man and more responsible in my life, because I had a new baby sister to protect and watch over for years. My mother is a hero, because she took it as if it was another day in the life of a new birth and I respect her for that.

Over the years, I became devoted to my sister and appreciated every moment I spent with her. To this day, I am still proud to her older brother and for me to be a guardian and a role model to her. The process of birth really brought a lot out of me and made me realize how precise life truly is and that we must protect those we love. The day of that beautiful birth, I realized how much I loved and respected my mother to go through with the process not once but four times, and to not complain about it once. She is tough and made me more mentally tough as well as more responsible for having to deal with my little sister. My life is now devoted on making the life of my mother and father as easy as possible.
